REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HELSINKI -- The Finnish border guard confirmed on Wednesday they have detained three Syrian men who illegally crossed the eastern border of Finland seeking asylum.

The three crossed the border at Kitee, an eastern town of Finland, on Monday night, Finnish national broadcaster YLE reported.

The men said that they started their trip on foot from last Sunday. Once they crossed the border they sought help at a local guest house, as one of them suffered frostbite on his feet.

The local temperature was minus 25 degrees Celsius at that time, said the report.

The border guards called police and emergency services after they found the border-crossing case. Two of the three were immediately detained, and the one with badly frozen feet was sent to hospital for treatment.

The asylum seekers said they entered Finland due to the conflicts in their homeland.

The local border Patrol will conduct an initial investigation into the case while police are responsible for asylum request.
